Planning your honeymoon should take some thought. Both you and your future husband should choose the destination together so it is enjoyable to you both. Weddings are very expensive and in your wedding budget you need to allocate some funds towards your honeymoon destination. It is easier on your pocketbook by making $100 payments every few weeks than putting one lump sum at the end.

As I have mentioned in a previous posts, honeymoon registry is becoming very popular. When that final payment is due you may be pleasantly surprised what you actual owe. Do you really need to get two toasters at the bridal shower?

Have your luggage packed a couple days before the wedding and make sure all of your passport and or documents are in order. Remember you will have a name change so check with your travel agent if it would have any affect on your travels. Try not to fly out in the early morning hours following the reception. You are exhausted from a long day and the last thing you want to do is sit in an airport for 3 hours. If time allows, give yourself a day to get organized before jetting off into the sunset together.

Interesting fact:

In the old Celtic days the bride and groom were given a cask of mead (honey wine) after the wedding. When the mead was gone the honeymoon was over. It usually lasted 28 days. That must be why people say "the honeymoon is over" How nice would that be to book a trip for 28 days! Source

While raising children (or not) it's so important to keep your relationship with your spouse alive. One way to do that is by getting away from it all and taking a 2nd honeymoon. But when is the right time to do that after your 5th, 10th or 15th year of marriage?

At five years of marriage you may have had your first or second child. This is such a hard time to get away if you still have little ones running around. Finances are tight with new expenses to the budget like childcare and diapers. IF you can get away for your 5th anniversary – do it! I know you could use a break.

If you can't get away at five years, do something romantic with the traditional and modern day suggested anniversary gifts and explain the meaning behind them. Your spouse will be touched by the research and thought that went into it.

At ten years of marriage you are probably much more established in your career. This might be a much better time in your life to "get away" from the every day responsibilities. If you have the disposable income to do so, go on a 2nd honeymoon. Unless your first honeymoon was to die for, pick a new destination to celebrate who you are today, ten years later and make new memories there.

The #1 second honeymoon destination is Hawaii. I have never been but would go in a heart beat. Other suggested ideas for a second honeymoon are cruises, Europe, Italy, Mexico, Tahiti and St. Lucia. We took our 2nd honeymoon to Europe. It was a once in a lifetime vacation. Just like your first honeymoon, spend plenty of time planning every little detail. Make the departure special by staying overnight at a hotel near your airport or a large major city. Book first class tickets so you are treated like a king and queen during the flight. (Remember, for the past ten years you have been taking care of everyone else. This is your chance to be taken care of.)

Whenever you travel outside of the U.S. be sure to know your the 'ins and outs' of your major medical insurance. It might be necessary to carry international travel health insurance during your 2nd honeymoon. You would not want to sustain an accident or become sick overseas and then find out you have no health coverage. If someone dies abroad it costs upwards of $10,000 (without medical insurance) to bring your remains back to the U.S. (Not romantic, I know, but very important to understand).

Back to the fun part. Book the most exotic hotel or resort in your selected destination. Spend the extra money because it may be another ten years or until you are empty nesters who are no longer paying college tuition before you get a third chance at a honeymoon.

Let's assume the years have flown by and many excuses have been made and now you are approaching your fifteen year anniversary and yet no second honeymoon. It's never too late. Make it happen and make it a priority this year. If you get away for this fifteenth anniversary purchase a special piece from your vacation destination that represents the suggested fifteen year anniversary gift. It will be a special piece of your life to pass on to your children.

The moral of this story is to make your relationship a top priority. Second honeymoons are amazing but long weekends away can be just as beneficial to keeping the flame alive. Do plenty of research and planning to make any time away, without kids and ALONE extra special. Source

My husband and I traveled around Europe on a budget for our honeymoon. It was a great way to see Europe – we met so many wonderful people! We started out in Italy, where we went to Rome, Florence, and Venice – we loved Florence the best, as it is the most romantic of the three. Venice is too touristy, and Rome is overdone, but Florence is just so charming! After exploring Italy, we moved on to Spain – we stopped in Barcelona first, where neither of us could understand their Spanish, despite the fact that both of us are fluent, and Madrid, which captured my heart.

In Madrid, the giant public park downtown was our favorite; we strolled through it and had a picnic on the grass. Additionally, the museum of fashion was surprisingly interesting to me, although I am in no way a “fashionista”! After Spain, we went to Lisbon, which is charming, although we had several problems being accosted by hobos. We didn’t stay long and soon went to Paris, which was lovely. There’s a reason so many people go to Paris for their honeymoons – the Eiffel Tower at night is one of the most romantic things you can see! Walking hand in hand underneath it was simply wonderful. We ended our trip in Brussels, Belgium, which was my personal favorite.

The historic buildings, full of stories, and of course all the chocolate you can ask for! My husband wasn’t as enamored with the chocolate, but he understood. All in all, it was a fantastic trip; we invested in a rail pass which was a good choice, although sometimes we had to pay extra to get reservations. Although it is a less popular choice, I would definitely recommend backpacking for a honeymoon trip. It brings you closer together! Source

Some couples start by leafing through travel or bridal magazines and looking for pictures that are appealing and romantic – you can do this, but you're more likely to settle on the best-marketed destination rather than the best destination for your wants, needs, and style.

The following are questions you should ask yourself – it'll help you figure out what your options are, and help you ask better questions of your travel agent… which will help you plan that perfect honeymoon.

1. When are you going?

Every destination has its high and low seasons, and this is typically a combination of weather and the times of the year that their tourists typically take vacations. Some destinations, such as Hawaii, have very little variance in their weather year-round; others, like the Caribbean have a definite hurricane season.

Yet it's important to know that the Caribbean is a very big place; different parts have different hurricane seasons, and some parts of the western Caribbean really aren't hurricane prone at all. Other destinations – such as Central America and Southeast Asia – have rainy or monsoon seasons.

You really need to know the specific destination in order to have a feel for whether or not their "green" season is too "green" (rainy!) for you.

Also, ask yourself if you're willing to delay the start of your honeymoon a couple of weeks or months. Summer months are very popular for weddings, this also tends to be the expensive (and sometimes more crowded) season for many honeymoon destinations.

Giving yourself a month off after the wedding before leaving on your honeymoon in many ways is not such as bad idea. It gives you time to relax and wind down from the wedding, write your thank-you notes, and take advantage of the lower prices of what's known as the "shoulder season" (between high and low season).

2. What Will You Be Eating?

How adventurous of an eater are you? How about your fiancé? Do you like to try the local food, try many different restaurants? Often resorts will have very good American and European menus, but for authentic local cuisine you'll have to venture outside the resort.

All-inclusives and cruises often make fabulous food very affordable; if you're not at an all-inclusive resort, the on-property restaurants are often pretty pricey compared to outside restaurants, and tend to be less authentic with respect to local/native cuisine.

If your chosen resort is in or near a reasonably large town or tourist area, you may have lots of choice for dinner; if you're secluded and isolated, it's possible that you have no choice but to dine at the resort (and pay their prices, if it's not included!).

In areas like Fiji and Tahiti, you'll often find that while the resort isn't officially all-inclusive, they do have a "meal plan" which covers food and sometimes drinks. Sometimes these plans cover just breakfast and dinner, which leaves you the option of trying the local cuisine and eating relatively inexpensively for lunch.

3. Language

This is less of a problem than you might think. Unless you're backpacking around some exotic country, you're going to find people in restaurants, hotels, and the activity vendors all speak English.

Tip: try to learn a few words and phrases in the local language, as you'll find you're treated differently if you begin conversations with "hello" in their language, and show you're willing to make the effort to get along in their country.

4. Cost

The big question! First, some statistics: the average Australian couple spends about $5000 for their honeymoon package…and this doesn't included expenditures once they're at their destination.

When considering a resort that's NOT all-inclusive, take some time to research the area and find out what meals cost, what a snorkel trip costs, what taxis cost, etc. Costs of excursions and meals can easily add up to much more than your airfare and hotel, and you need to be realistic and prepared for this. Tourist bureau sites are a good place to start.

Tip: If staying at multiple hotels on your honeymoon spend one or two nights somewhere really nice to start, then a more moderate property during your honeymoon and finish off at a great place before going home.

5. Travel time/vacation time

How much time off work are you going to take? And how much of it are you willing to spend on an airplane?

If you're going on an African safari, you're going to consume about a day and a half traveling there and back. This is fine if you're going to be there a couple of weeks, but if those days are coming off your total allocation of 7 days for your honeymoon, you might consider somewhere closer.

Distance isn't the only factor: how many stopovers is it going to take to get where you're going? 6. The People and The Population

There are a number of important considerations here. First off, who else is going to be at your resort? Are most of the guests at the resort in your age group? Are they young and adventurous, or older and mostly interested in golf?

Does the resort market to families and is it school holidays? – are you going to find a crowd of kids splashing around in the pool when you're trying to have a romantic, relaxing time?

Is the bar going to be lively, with your kind of music? Are you going to feel right at home, or a bit out of place?

Do you prefer to be in the middle of the action, with lots of other happy honeymooners all around, or quieter and more secluded? Think about whether you want to be in a hotel with 400 rooms, or a resort with 40 private villas…the experience will be very different.

Do you want to be waited on hand and foot, or left alone to explore by yourselves?

Generally, at the all-inclusive resorts, you'll find yourselves with other tourists, separated from the local style. If you want to immerse yourselves in the local environment, perhaps consider a smaller hotel, farther from the main tourist areas.

7. The Accommodation

How sensitive are you to humidity and temperature? This can determine not only the destination, but also the choice of resort, as not all A/C systems are created equal.

How close do you want to be to nature? At some fabulous safari lodges in Africa there are no walls…just mosquito nets to protect you at night. For some, this is a dream come true-for others it might be a nightmare.

How important is your living space in your hotel room? Do you feel claustrophobic easily? Do you like to lounge around in the morning, have breakfast in bed, or do you like to get up and out there exploring the island?
